Currently on display at Hurstville Museum & Gallery is the exhibition USE. This exhibition features exquisitely crafted contemporary jewellery and small objects by seventeen artists from the Jewellers and Metalsmiths Group of Australia (Queensland Chapter), toured by Museums & Galleries Queensland.
Katie Stormonth is a contemporary jewellery designer based in Brisbane, Australia. She completed a Bachelor of Fine Art with Honours in 2011 specialising in Jewellery & Small Objects at Queensland College of Art, Griffith University and currently works there as a technical officer. She has exhibited locally, nationally and internationally, and completed an artist residency in 2016 with Brisbane City Council.
Stormonth experiments with materials and concepts and has stated a key aim of her work is to “expand the boundaries of wearable body adornment”. She wants wearers to utilise their sense of sight and touch with her pieces, as she prefers to highlight patterns, bold colour and texture in her work “aiming to provoke the wearer to both see and feel the pieces”.
Stormonth was one of the four founding members of Bench. While now disbanded, Bench was a shared workspace for jewellery makers to new works and an opportunity to collaborate and encourage discussion around contemporary jewellery design. She has also worked collaboratively with fellow USE artist and Bench co-founder, Clare Poppi, with their joint venture, Clare & Katie.
USE is on display at Hurstville Museum & Gallery from 1 August – 25 October 2020.
