Artbomb – Dawei Xu

Artbomb is not your average exhibition.  Artbomb: connect + create brings together local artists, our local community and Hurstville Museum & Gallery in a slow release explosion of creativity and artistic expression. This exhibition provides a unique opportunity to meet and collaborate with artists as they work within our space. Come in and reconnect.

On Tuesday 9 June 2020 between 10.00am – 1.00pm, visitors will be able to chat with and observe artist Dawei Xu in the Main Gallery space of Hurstville Museum & Gallery. We were able to ask Dawei a few questions in regard to his practices.

Can you give us an insight into your artistic process? Is your work pre-planned or created intuitively? How long does each work take to complete?

My artworks were pre-planned in my head. When I pick up the brush, I paint with the flow. In recent years, I have been working on small formats and most of them are colour sketches on paper. I enjoy seeing the water, ink and colours mixing and moving on the surface of paper. The unexpected effects drive me further into the development of my paintings. I need to have the painting at least 60% complete in my mind before I pick up a brush, and the actual painting process only takes about a couple of hours.

Can you explain your technique; how you manipulate the medium?

I use acrylic ink for most of my sketches. It has the benefit of both watercolour and acrylic.

Do you keep some kind of ongoing drawing book or diary? Or a collection of images or photographs for inspiration?

My sketchbooks are my best friends. I keep one with me all the time. If I can I prefer painting plein-air. But if I were in hurry, I try to observe the impression of the scene as much as I can and take photos for my reference.

Who are your favourite artists? Who do you draw inspiration from?

I love David Hockney’s paintings. Another of my favorite artist’s is Shaun Tan.
